Tips for Taking Them

Online courses are more popular now than ever. The number of students opting for online courses rises every day. Online courses are appealing for individuals who are self-disciplined and able to motivate themselves to learn in a non-traditional classroom. Online courses are perfect for people seeking higher education while still being able to work full-time or while caring for a family.

When enrolling in online courses, a student must have access to a computer with an Internet connection. Students are also usually required to maintain an e-mail address. Students should consider whether they should opt for a non-credit course or a credit course to apply accredited credit hours toward a college degree.

After a student has located the online courses they want to sign up for, he or she should fill out the appropriate registration forms, pay the course fees, and download any class materials. The next step is to read the class guidelines so he or she will know exactly how to begin.

The following tips will help a person taking online courses to complete his or her education with ease.
  • Communicate with the instructor. A student should read the class guidelines so he or she knows how and when to contact the instructor. With online courses, a student will usually contact an instructor via e-mail. A student should make sure he or she knows how to contact the instructor and how often they should do so. Students should ask questions, inquire about their progress, or just let the instructor know how much they are enjoying the class.

  • Do not skip over materials. A student should read everything that is part of the class curriculum and then read it again. Students should acquire information required and use every resource provided. Every book, report, class video, etc. is important and given to students for a reason. Students should not skip over what they do not want to do.

  • Know the expectations up front. When are assignments due and how should they be turned in? By mail or by e-mail? What is the process for tests and exams? Are tests and exams “open book” or are they “closed book” where students are trusted not to cheat? Students should know the class schedule, class checkpoints, and what happens at the end of the class.

  • Use the information available online. Many times online courses offer “help desks” or “frequently asked questions” pages that may answer a student's questions.

  • Print and highlight important information. If the class textbook is an online e-book, students should consider printing it out and highlighting pertinent areas just as with a regular textbook. This can make reading and studying a breeze.
